JONIS IS #1 In 1984, the Trijonis brothers, who were what would seem to be your average village musicians, moved to Siauliai. Not knowing many of the other musicians in town they decided to form their own band "Jonis". As it turns out they were not your average village musicians. They immediately became a hit in the local area. In 1987 they released their first album and now "Jonis" music quickly became popular all throughout Lithuania's villages and cities. 21 years and 18 albums and CD's and 2 video DVD's later Jonis STILL is the most popular musical group in Lithuania. Other singers and musical group's popularity come and go but Jonis' popularity goes on and on. Why is this? After listening to one song you will know why. They are an exceptionally talented group of musicians. It is not only their ability for singing and playing musical instruments, it is their ability to put everything together to create a performance that lifts your spirits into the outer atmosphere and is absolutely overpowering. Another reason for their continued popularity and #1 position is their completely unique style. They are accomplished traditional Lithuanian folk music musicians. They are also accomplished Bluegrass musicians. I have had the pleasure of attending a number of their performances. At one concert they played what I would consider the best performance of traditional Lithuanian folk music I have ever heard. Another time I saw them perform at a Bluegrass festival in Vilnius (yes, Bluegrass music is very popular in Lithuania). Once again their professionalism and musical ability was overpowering. It was very interesting and enjoyable to hear Bluegrass with a Lithuanian twist. At another performance they played the music that has become their trademark, traditional Lithuanian village music with a little hint of Bluegrass mixed in. They blew the audience away. Lithuanians are typically a reserve people (at least we like to give that impression) but not on this night. The reaction from the crowd was as if they were watching Lietuvos Rytas and Zalgiris play a championship game. This kind of reaction is not limited to Lithuania. Jonis has gained international notoriety and their return performances are welcomed in many countries. In this their latest CD they play the music that is their trademark, traditional style Lithuanian folk music with a hint of Bluegrass.
