Poet Bronius Krivickas poet and partisan who died in battle in 1952 wrote, "A historian in the future who opens the pages of our nation's life will be most surprised by two things. First, he will be surprised by the unthinkable horror of the current slavery, the unprecedented cruelty and the terrifically sophisticated system of the communist slavery, which seems to be able to stop the breathing of every free man and make him a complete slave, not only physically but also spiritually. However the future historian will be even more surprised that a nation under such a yoke of slavery did not fall but managed to struggle hard and long. And the historian will ask from where did thousands of partisans, who chose death instead of horrible slavery to the enemy, draw such toughness and strength, and from where did the enslaved, who chose martyrdom instead of betrayal, draw their strength."

The Lithuanian partisan war was and still remains unknown in the West. In July of 1944,the Soviet army marched into Lithuania. The second Soviet occupation began and this time it lasted for almost five decades. During the first decade Lithuania fought its war.

The Lithuanian armed anti-Soviet resistance of 1944 - 1953 was the largest and longest gorilla war in Europe in the 20th century. This book explains who the partisans were, how they were formed, how they operated, how they were supported, what they were hoping for and how they were abandoned by the West. The photos are priceless and the stories about some of the individual partisans are inspiring.
