LITHUANIAN Postage Stamps 2008 and 2009 have been noteworthy years for Lithuanian historical events. There was the 75th ANNIVERSARY of S.DARIUS AND S.GIRENAS TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT, the 1000th ANNIVERSARY of LlTHUANIA, the 20th ANNIVERSARY of LITHUANIAN MOVEMENT "SAJUDIS" and the 90th ANNIVERSARY of the RESTORED STATE of LITHUANIA. Also there was Lithuania's participation in the XXIX OLYMPIC GAMES held in Beijing, China. 2009 brought Lithuania's Millennium of its name.
To commemorate these events, the Lithuanian Postal Service has created "First Day Sheets". They are printed on high quality stock similar to what high quality greeting cards are printed on. The design is also that of a greeting card. There is an illustrated cover and when you open the card there is a description of the event along with the actual postage stamps. The description is in both Lithuanian and English.
