LITHUANIAN SASHES / JUOSTOS The Sash / Juosta has been a part of Lithuanian culture and tradition for so long that no one can really say when it began and from what part of Lithuania it came from. In Lithuania to this day sashes / juostos are still worn as a part of traditional dress and a part of the Lithuanian National Costume.
We have had numerous requests for sashes from our clients, so many in fact that we decided to make them a regular part of our service at Baltic Value. The challenge was finding an artist that could provide us with them. The art of hand weaving, like so many of the other traditional arts through out the world, is slowly fading away. Every year there are fewer and fewer artists hand weaving sashes / juostos.
We were very fortunate to have been offered the services of Rigina Ciceniene. Mrs. Ciceniene has many years of experience hand weaving Lithuanian juostos. Her work is currently on display in a working exposition of Traditional Hand Weaving in the Tamosaitis Museum in the Old Town of Vilnius.
There are two widths
5 cm / apx 2 inches - This is considered the men's juosta
4 cm / apx 1 ½ inches - This is considered the women's juosta
Both are 250 cm / apx 99 inches long
A word about the colors
The materials used to make the juosta are dyed using a natural process to achieve their color. Those of you familiar with dyeing using a natural process know that from one batch to another it is virtually impossible to duplicate the exact shade of color. As a result, if you order a juosta that has dark brown in it, it will be dark brown. If you order a second juosta that has dark brown in it, the second juosta will also be dark brown but if the material came from a different dye batch it is possible that the shade of dark brown will not be exactly the same as the dark brown in the other juosta. Again this is a result of using a natural dyeing process. It also can make each juosta somewhat unique.

In addition to being a part of traditional dress and a part of the Lithuanian National Costume, people find the juosta a very fashionable accessory worn as a belt. Worn this way people don't always want the 250 cm length. If you want a juosta for a belt just contact us and tell us what length you want it to be.
